On 17 – 19 July 2018, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) Mpumalanga Provincial Office will be hosting human rights awareness roadshows in three areas of the province, namely: Mayflower, Driekoppies and Dludluma Trusts. The roadshows are centred on the theme: “Strengthening Human Rights Awareness in Rural Areas”.

The South African Human Rights Commission will be hosting a launch of its 2017/18 Equality Report on Achieving substantive economic equality through rights-based radical socio-economic transformation in South Africa. The Equality Report seeks to evaluate government’s progress in implementing its programme of radical socio-economic transformation, aimed at achieving substantive socio-economic equality, as contained in the Medium Term Strategic Framework.

On 14 May 2018, the trial proceedings against Respondents who racially abused and allegedly forced a farm worker (assisted by the South African Human Rights Commission) commenced at the Springs Magistrates’’ Court sitting as an Equality Court. At the beginning of the trial, the public and the media were barred from covering the case. After cogent legal submissions by the Commission, the public and the media will now be allowed to cover the hearing from 2 to 5 July 2018.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Gauteng Provincial Office) initiated proceedings against Velaphi Khumalo in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting as an Equality Court in November 2016, following a Facebook post by Khumalo that amounted to hate speech. The trial is set to continue on 02 & 03 July 2018.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the SAHRC”) instituted an application in the Equality Court held at the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on behalf of Pamela MacDougall (“the Applicant”) against Stephanie Odendaal (“the Respondent”), following several offensive, hurtful and discriminatory comments that were made by the Respondent on the social network site, Facebook. The Respondents comments were based on race and were directed at the Applicant and persons involved and/or engaging in mixed race relationships in general.

The youth in the Matlala rural areas will be empowered on human rights and responsibilities. The engagement will further serve to strengthen relationships with Advice Offices and explore challenges faced in enjoying human rights.

The purpose of the dialogue is to promote a culture of tolerance for sexual and gender diversity in society as well as discuss possible tools towards ending violence and related human rights violations based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

In 2000 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to celebrate and commemorate World Refugee day to raise awareness about the plight of refugees throughout the world.

The events of this day during 1976, put our youth at the centre of ensuring that Apartheid was dismantled and that various rights including language rights, the right to education and equal participation were respected for all South Africans.

On 31 May 2018 hundreds of workers employed by Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital embarked on protest action over unpaid performance bonuses which left the hospital in a chaotic and dishevelled state. This protest action led to a shutdown of the facility. Reports indicate that the protest action severely disrupted the operations of the Hospital, which had a negative impact on the provision of health services to many of the hospital users.
