The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) will on Monday 23rd July 2018, be presenting its findings from a study tour to the United Kingdom and Poland on a model of a National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) in terms of South Africa’s obligations under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT), which requires states to institute measures to prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment or treatment.

 The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) welcomes the widely anticipated judgment handed down in the Bhisho High Court, in the Eastern Cape, yesterday, in relation to the inadequacies of the school infrastructure norms and standards. The Court ruled that the norms and standards were inconsistent with the Constitution and thus invalid.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in collaboration with the Commission for Gender Equality will conduct a public outreach clinic in Grabouw, as part of its activities in commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day, from 18 – 20 July 2018.  Mandela Day calls on us all to make the world a better place. This significant day celebrates our former President, Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about change. This year the Country celebrates 100 years since his birth.

During May 2017, the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) received approximately 77 complaints regarding the content of the book, “Lyfslim vir Seuns”. The Respondent in this matter is Mrs Gretha Wiid who is the author of the book in question.
The complainants allege that the publication constitutes unfair discrimination on the basis of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) and that it amounts to hate speech.

 The South Africa Human Rights Commission Gauteng Provincial Office, will visit Hammanskraal tomorrow, this after residents complained that the water in the area could be contaminated with cholera and poor health care services at Jubilee District Hospital. The residents allege that the City of Tshwane and Jubilee Hospital have violated their right to human dignity, clean environment, access to water, health and access to information by its failure to provide them with clean water and to administer measures aimed at ensuring that their right to water and healthcare is realised.
